‘Are we nearly there?’ does not wash with this father of four, Tassie entrepreneur and partner of Power to Change, John Zeckendorf. He has already climbed the six highest peaks on each continent. This week he arrives in Nepal and will take 8 weeks to reach the summit of Mt Everest. The climb is precarious and dangerous even for the seasoned climbers in his group.
John is climbing Mt Everest as a personal challenge and to raise the profile and capacity of Power to Change and also Pathways Tasmania. He said, ‘I’m climbing Mt Everest with Power to Change. It’s another way to engage and support them. To carry the Gospel message to this end of the earth, just as they do it every day.’
In his survival suit jacket pocket, he’ll be carrying bi-lingual Gospel tracts in Nepali so he can share with the Sherpas. At the summit, if the weather allows, he’ll place a flag with the words ‘to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8’
By the time John sees Everest’s summit of 29,029 feet he is hoping to also see $29K fundraised for Power to Change to use in growing its campus, youth, family and church movements strategies.
Over the next 8 weeks of his Everest 29K climb, Power to Change will keep you posted on live updates of his progress, prayer requests, a collage of interesting anecdotes and photos of John and Everest. Plus answer some questions you may have about surviving Everest.
