QLD MYC 2018 image

At Mid Year Conference 2018, we want to grow together in our understanding of Courage and how courage plays a part in living out the Christian life. We also want to learn more about God and how to share our faith, all while experiencing community. Students from all over QLD will be gathering at MYC to hear from our guest speaker Grant Bickerton, and to be part of taking the next step in their faith with the help of Power to Change. Whether you have been following Jesus for many years, or are just getting to know Him, join us at QLD MYC 2018!

Meet the Speaker

grantGrant Bickerton and his wife Kathryn have been serving with Power to Change for over 18 years. Having formative experiences with Power to Change in West Asia on numerous summer projects and a STINT, Grant served for 10 years on campus in NSW, before doing a PhD in psychology focusing on organisational, psychological, and spiritual factors that promote wellbeing among Christian clergy and missionaries. He now serves in the Power to Change office in Melbourne seeking to apply his research across Power to Change.

What is your role within Power to Change?

"I work with the Member Services Team of Power to Change down in the Melbourne HQ. My specific focus is on the wellbeing and development of Power to Change missionaries. My role involves seeking to help people to do well in ministry, get involved to assist people when they may be struggling for various reasons, and also keep some involvement in direct ministry to students. That's why I'm so excited to be coming to MYC in QLD!!"

What excites you about the topic of our conference...Courage - becoming a multiplier?

"The opportunity to pause and together hear Jesus' personal call to us to follow Him in what He is doing in His world by the Holy Spirit - both in us as individuals, through us as communities of Power to Change expressed on various university campuses, and through you into the rest of your life wherever you go!"

What do you hope to see and experience at this conference?

"I just love being with uni students at MYCs. I particularly enjoy having conversations with people that are meaningful and deep, and also love any opportunity to play touch footy or ultimate Frisbee!"

What is something most people don't know about you?

"I can wiggle my ears!  I love 1980s and 1990s hard rock guitar music - I mean, I really love guitar music!"

What would you like to share with the students before conference?

"So often the pace of life feels like it only gets faster! And it takes all our effort to just keep on top of what has to be done today. So one day can roll into a week, and then a month, semester, and year. Pretty soon, I find that uni is almost finished and life just bounces on to the next phase along with everyone else. Time away - like we can have at MYC, is a rare opportunity to pause and tune into what our loving heavenly Father has been wanting to say to us personally.  He wants to encourage us with His love and presence in the person of the Holy Spirit, and call us to lift our eyes up from a focus on what is directly ahead, and expand our vision to see the bigger picture of what Jesus is calling us to follow Him into."

What we'll get up to

Worship:
We get to come together and worship God through music a couple times a day and even have a night of Praise and Worship led by our worship band!

Quiet Time:
While we want everyone to gather together to learn from the Bible, we also want you to get time alone to read the Bible, talk to God, and process anything you may be learning.

Nightlife:
In the evenings there will be time to play games, have a chat, do crafts, and have fun with the new people you are meeting!

Teaching:
We get to hear and learn from our main speaker Grant Bickerton. He'll be teaching from the Bible about Courage!

Training:
There will be multiple opportunities to break out into sessions to learn about God, be trained in how to talk to people about Jesus, or be part of leading the movement at your campus!

Going Global:
Power to Change wants the Gospel to be made known not only on university campuses in Australia, but all over the world. With this goal in mind, we'll get to hear about the places we can go overseas for a summer or longer to share our faith with others.

Free Time:
Teaching and training can be fun, but we like to break it up a bit and have fun with new and old friends. Sport, games, coffee, rest, and other activities are what students typically find themselves doing during their free time.

Campus Time:
Bond with people from your own campus or area! Campus time is important to us because it encourages us to continue pursuing God and community even when conference is over.

International Community:
MYC is a place for both local Australian and International students to come together to connect with Jesus and each other. There will be arrangements made for our friends whose first language is not English to experience the same teaching and training everyone is engaging with. There will be lots of opportunities to experience community with other international students!
